Data Retention & Deletion
Last updated August 19, 2026
This page explains how long we keep different kinds of data and when it is deleted. It works together with our Privacy Policy.
Principles
- We keep personal data only as long as needed for the stated purpose, or as the law requires.
- When an advising association ends, the counselor's copy of your data is deleted; your own records stay with you.
- Consent receipts and audit logs are kept for accountability even after the underlying data is deleted.
Schedule
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Advising notes (held by a counselor) | Deleted 30 days after the association ends |
| Relay messages (counselor ↔ student) | Deleted 30 days after the association ends |
| Advising association record | Retained as a historical record, with personal data minimized |
| Your own profile, saved items, and applications | Retained until you delete them or close your account |
| Consent records | Retained as receipts for as long as needed for accountability and legal requirements |
| Verification results (pass/fail + a provider reference) | Retained per FCRA and vendor requirements; we do not store ID images or raw reports |
| Audit logs | Retained per our security requirements |
| Ratings & reviews | Retained while displayed; removed reviews are excluded from the average |
| Guardianship records | Retained while active; on revocation or adult transition, the association is suspended and minor-data handling follows the schedule above |
| Account closure | Personal data deleted or anonymized within 30 days, except records the law requires us to keep |
These windows are subject to legal holds and any longer minimums required by FCRA or applicable state law.
Turning 18
When a student turns 18, guardian visibility is suspended and supervision clears to the adult default; guardian-consent records are kept as history.
